Our London Elections event takes place on Monday 1st March at 1830.

All Westminster restaurant street closures should be extended to Monday and Tuesday to maximise Eat Out To Help Out trading

Westminster City Council needs to ensure al-fresco dining can take place on every night of
the Eat Out to Help Out scheme. The gap between national and local government actions
has resulted in a national Government campaign operating Monday to Wednesday and
some of our streets supporting al-fresco dining Wednesday to Sunday. This gap needs to be urgently closed before Eat Out To Help Out ends.

Westminster Liberal Democrats call for an outright smoking ban for alfresco-dining

The call by Westminster Liberal Democrats for Westminster City Council to ban smoking for outside dining and drinking as a condition for licensing additional tables has been picked up by the Local Government Association, been discussed in the House of Lords and resulted in the Planning Minister, Christopher Pincher announcing there will be no outright alfresco dining smoking ban but a compromise which sees restaurants providing outdoor non-smoking and smoking sections.

Westminster smoking ban in outdoor eating & drinking venues.

We support efforts to enable Westminster’s hospitality sector to reopen safely and trade viably as they adapt to meet social distancing requirements. While supporting Westminster City Council’s plan for ‘Reopening Westminster’s hospitality sector’ which will see more pavement space being used by restaurants and bars we asked our Council to make outside dining and drinking spaces no smoking. This request has been ignored.

We’ve today written to Westminster City Council asking for an impact assessment to be carried out to assess the risks to health and social distancing posed by very large numbers returning to the city as we come out of lockdown.

Due to the Covid-19 outbreak, we have ceased all campaigning and are asking our members and supporters to concentrate on non-political efforts to help the community weather this crisis. If you are volunteering, the advice from Westminster City Council is to help out as close to home as possible.
