Individuals with a disability who seek to stand or is standing for elected office face numerous barriers, and to date few steps have been taken towards improving access.
Julie Adnams-Hatch is Interim Chair of the LDDA, Independent adviser with Devon & Cornwall police, Carer, Regional representative for Devon & Cornwall Liberal Democrats European Group. Julie has a disability herself, uses a wheelchair and has an assistance dog. She understands the need to support anyone with a disability in all stages of their career to develop confidence, as well as clarity.
A range of policies, reports, reviews and measures are available, nonetheless, interviews with individuals who aspired to be, stood to be, or successfully became candidates, highlighted the range of barriers they faced, during various stages of the recruitment and representation stages.
How can we identify, analyse, so as to prevent and overcome barriers to holding elected office faced by individuals who have a disability within in our constituency?
The Cities of London and Westminster Liberal Democrats are actively looking for ways to empower and support our candidates, but we cannot do so alone.
Julie will talk through the barriers faced by candidates with a disability and discuss ways that we as a local party can provide support and promote empowerment.
