Response to Westminster CC Homeless Rehousing Policy

PRESS RELEASE

Tackling Westminster’s social housing crisis must be made a priority - Westminster & City of London Liberal Democrats respond to plans to rehouse Westminster’s homeless in faraway places.

In response to the news that Westminster City Council may have to send individuals and families who are homeless as far away as Coventry, Alexander Harding, Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Spokesperson for Westminster North, said:

“It is a tragedy that the lack of affordable housing in Westminster has contributed to the rising number of homeless in the borough. That individuals and families could also be forced to move as far away as Coventry will only serve to further disconnect
them from the local community that they have forged historic connections with.

“As Westminster and City of London Liberal Democrats, we will seek to prevent unfair evictions by landlords renting out homes privately, given that the council has admitted some 60% of homelessness in Westminster owes to evictions.”*

Bridget Fox, Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Spokesperson for the Cities of London and Westminster, added:

“Through our MPs and our GLA member we will also continue to push both regional and national government to tackle the root cause of this problem, by building more affordable homes in London, including social housing for rent.

“We await the outcome of the inquiry announced by London Mayor Sadiq Khan into the problem of empty homes, due in the spring.** Transparency International UK previously found Westminster has the highest proportion of properties in all London boroughs that are owned by offshore companies based in tax havens.*** The priority must be to provide local families and individuals with housing that is accessible and affordable.”
